Honoring Time as a Gift from God: a Collection of Recovery Prayers for the Liturgical Year

Time is a gift to us from God – a gift that we often take for granted. God had a plan for creation and he set that plan in motion before the beginning of time, ordaining that the plan would unfold as a mystery throughout the ages. Contained within this plan “is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens” (Ecclesiastes 3:1), and those who cultivate a “wise heart will know the proper time and procedure” for everything (Ecclesiastes 3:8). The way we develop a wise and discerning heart is by being mindful of the prayers offered during each of the liturgical seasons and following the pattern of Mary, the mother of Jesus, who “kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart” (Luke 2:19). The Liturgical Calendar marks time throughout the year based on the events in the life of Christ. Following the liturgical seasons keeps us attuned to our faith, and stimulates our spirit by providing a daily connection to God. This article provides a sample collection of the various prayers we use at St. Joseph Institute during each liturgical season in an effort to help our residents acknowledge God’s presence in their daily lives and learn to cultivate a relationship with him.
