This model provides an understanding of the human person as a psycho-spiritual entity whose self/soul can be cultivated from a purely Christian perspective through both an intellectual knowledge of our faith and an ongoing relationship with God. The model includes an examination of the three aspects of the soul: the Being Self, the Relating Self, and the Doing Self. Our Being Self is the place where we find our own special identity. In this part we rest and reflect on our identity as a child of God who possesses unique characteristics and a capacity to grow in righteousness. We also understand our sinful nature and our need for Redemption in Christ. From this fundamental identity, we can explore the events of life and discover how those events form who we are, what we believe, and the attitudes and rules that dictate our behaviors. The Relating Self holds our capacity to bond and engage in relationships. Our relationship with God forms the foundation of the Relating Self. From this aspect we discover how to relate to self and others through our relationship with God. We learn lessons in relating by stepping back and observing our interactions with others; noticing our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in response to the words and actions of others. The Doing Self governs the expression of our sense of creativity and purpose. It is a place where we discover how we are called to serve the Lord and contribute to his plan of salvation. Through the Doing Self we learn how to identify our unique gifts and use them to contribute to our family, our place of employment, our community, our church, and society as a whole. Each aspect of the soul can be wounded and broken in a variety of ways. Through Christ, we finding healing and are restored to wholeness.
